The New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection believes that economic growth is spurred by an educated and informed consumer base; a robust, transparent and accountable marketplace that adheres to fair business and information security practices; and, the strong enforcement of reasonable consumer protections.

To that end, the Division pursues collaborations with business and industry and offers guidance, training and assistance with regulatory compliance.

Do Not Call Compliance
The Division works with telemarketers, solicitors and others to support Do Not Call Law compliance.

Data Security Breach Management
Learn what the law requires entities to do in the event of a data security breach, as well as additional best practices for responding to a data security breach. Implementing these procedures will help affected consumers take appropriate action to protect themselves against the threat of identity theft.

Information Privacy Management
Understanding and implementing identity theft mitigation strategies, best practices for personally identifying information management, good data retention and destruction guidance, and restrictions on the collection and use of Social Security numbers will help ensure client data remains confidential and secure.
