Do Not Call Compliance

Consumers can reduce the frequency of unwanted telemarketing calls by registering their personal phone numbers on the Do Not Call (DNC) Registry. This also allows businesses to better target their telemarketing by avoiding consumers who do not wish to receive sales calls. Registration on the DNC Registry does not expire unless canceled by the consumer.

The New York State DNC Law prohibits companies from calling any telephone number after it appears on the Registry for 31 days. Violators can be fined up to $11,000 per violation by the New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection, as well as by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Businesses and telemarketers can log on to www.donotcall.gov to purchase the entire U.S. database or gain access to the first five area codes for free, with additional area codes available for purchase.

The FTC assures list accuracy by periodically checking telephone numbers and removing those that are invalid, disconnected or reassigned.

Businesses can access the Division's Do Not Call Law Business Compliance brochure for more information. Do Not Call Law Enforcement information is also available.
