- Talk to a qualified housing counselor for help paying your mortgage. Check out the list of counseling agencies that offer assistance.
- Free housing counseling is also available through the Homeownership Preservation Foundation at 1-888-995-HOPE (4673), and information about how to avoid foreclosure is available on the Foundation's website
- The New York State Banking Department has launched a campaign designed to encourage homeowners who are behind on their mortgage payments or threatened with foreclosure to seek help from their lenders, loan servicers and nonprofit housing counselors.
