Before selecting a contractor, contact the New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection, your local consumer affairs office and the Better Business Bureau to find out if there have been complaints against the contractor, and if so, whether they have been resolved satisfactorily. You can also check the New York State Attorney General's database of judgments and complaints against contractors.
