Teaching Children to Save
Credit and Finance image

Given the importance of teaching children about the power of saving and fiscal responsibility, the New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection created its "Banking on Our Children" program. A series of award-winning children's videos, with accompanying activity worksheets, complement other Division resources for children, parents, guardians and educators.

Thanks to a partnership with the New York State School for the Blind in Batavia, New York, the Division also produced a "described" version of the two videos. Special technology provides a sound overlay with concise descriptions of each video's visual elements, making it possible for children who are blind or have low vision to fully enjoy and benefit from the videos.

Numerous schools, cultural and financial institutions, youth groups and community-based organizations have incorporated these resources into their curricula and activities. Additionally, the videos have been broadcast in several media markets.

About The Mystery of the Missing Piggy Bank

About A Sense of Saving

In "A Sense of Saving," children aged 7-9 receive an important lesson on spending beyond their means from Ben Franklin, who informs them that "a penny saved is a penny earned." A "Sense of Saving" was filmed on location at the New York State Museum and provides sweeping views of the Museum's extensive collections and lessons in history.
